The new hammer can drill holes 7-7/8in to 10in (200-254mm) in diameter and is suitable for a variety of drilling applications, including construction, foundations, micropiling, oil & gas, quarrying, mining, utilities, geothermal, environmental, horizontal and water well.

According to Numa, the design of the Patriot 85 hammer has demonstrated a significant advantage in speed and longevity; this improvement has been accomplished through technological advancements that allow for less internal components.

Furthermore, the Patriot 85 has a heavier piston than other 8in hammers and is best used with rigs with larger air consumption requirements.

As a result the Patriot 85 can drill at high frequency and promotes less vibration and smooth operation even while drilling against high heads of water. Numa stated that with a more efficient design, the Patriot 85 provides drillers with the potential to reduce expenses and increase profits.
