Sepiolite, a natural magnesium silicate clay belonging to the group of phyllosilicates with the chemical formula of Si12Mg8O30(OH)6(OH2)4·8H2O. It forms needle-like particles. The non-swelling needles can aggregate and associate to form a random network which is responsible for the viscosifying effect.
