Time to put industry shows on the school curriculum?

This is always the last piece of the magazine to be written. Usually, it gets done while I’m sitting in my office at home. Well, when I say office, I mean kitchen table. However, this time, I’m writing it in a hotel room as I’m in Italy attending the biannual geotechnical drilling industry event Geofluid.

GeoDrilling International October 2023

As ever, Geofluid has allowed me to catch up with many of my contacts within the industry, not only Italian but also from all over Europe and even North America.

There is still a great deal of concern about the lack of youngsters entering the drilling sector

What has been a joy to see is the positivity within the industry. Despite the daily news reports of international doom and gloom, get a group of drillers together, and laughter will follow.

Yet, despite the overall joyful nature of the attendees at Geofluid, ongoing issues still need to be solved that could cause problems for the industry in the long term. While supply chain difficulties brought about by COVID-19 lockdowns may have subsided, there is still a great deal of concern about the lack of youngsters entering the drilling sector.

The lack of youngsters interested in becoming drillers could clearly be seen by the lack of young people walking the show's aisles. Perhaps it's time for the industry to encourage schools and colleges to send students to events such as Geofluid and get an insight into what the industry has to offer career-wise.
