Under the contract Fugro will perform geotechnical drilling and cone penetration tests on newly reclaimed land, and provide laboratory testing to acquire geotechnical data for the new passenger building and related infrastructure.
The 3RS project comprises a 650-hectare land formation programme for the construction of a new runway, passenger building and related infrastructure. Upon completion of the 3RS, the airport will be able to serve an additional 30 million passengers annually.
Commenting on the award, Fugro's regional business line director, Dr Cyril Chan, said: "AAHK is a very important client who shares our values of safety and quality. They recognise that Fugro's client-focused culture and our strong delivery capability will complement their challenging project schedule. We look forward to providing AAHK with critical subsurface data to help them manage and mitigate their ground risks."
This project is the latest in a series of engagements undertaken by Fugro since 2011 on the 3RS project, providing AAHK and their engineering and construction partners with preliminary and detailed marine site investigations, geotechnical monitoring, and laboratory and environmental services. In addition to unlocking insights from geo-data, Fugro's work on the 3RS project helped AAHK validate the first large-scale use in Hong Kong of the more environmentally friendly deep cement mixing ground-improvement technique, which removes the need for dredging before reclamation to significantly reduce the impact on the marine environment.
