KLEMM Bohrtechnik's KR 700 series vertical drilling rigs are particularly well suited for constructing bored piles in confined spaces, an application known as restricted access piling. In such situations challenging demands are placed on the equipment used for reinforcing existing foundations, building new foundations in densely built-up areas and constructing piles on sites with limited accessibility or in buildings. KLEMM has now identified the United Kingdom a key market for these types of drilling rigs.
For decades, KLEMM Bohrtechnik has been offering specially designed drilling rigs in various weight and performance classes for confined space drilling applications and with the launch of the enhanced KR 709-3G, which allows for CFA (continuous flight auger) and SFA (sectional flight auger) applications for augur diameters up to 650mm, it has a rig that is easy to mobilise on construction sites.
The rig's compact dimensions and light weight (less than 20t) allows for easy transport and once on site, it can be deployed in just a few minutes after unloading and equipping with drilling tools.
The required drill mast versions were designed as a modular system in order to accommodate different applications. The basic drill mast can be combined with suitable extensions to construct piles up to 10.5m deep using single-pass methods. In addition to the version for CFA drilling, a version for jet grouting is also available, which can drill to depths of up to 20m with the help of an add-on rotary drive. There are also specially designed drill masts that allow the KR 709-3G to be used in enclosed spaces or under bridges with less than 5000mm of headroom.
With the KR 709-3G, KLEMM Bohrtechnik is introducing an exceptionally powerful and carefully thought-out crawler-based drilling rig that can be used in a variety of equipment configurations for many different applications.
The rig also features many practical features. These include wireless remote control allows for maximum flexibility in controlling the rig, expanding its operating capability and increasing operator safety and an optional, built-in concrete feed that facilitates construction site planning and significantly improves occupational and operational safety.
The hydraulics of the KR 709-3G feature cutting-edge load-sensing components. The machine control system uses modern CAN bus systems. These essential systems allow the individual hydraulic circuits to be configured independently of each other (power sharing) and the power output of the diesel engine to be automatically adjusted to the load condition in a highly dynamic way. All drilling rigs in this series are equipped with them and other technologies as part of the energy efficiency package.
The rig can be operated with guards in restricted operation mode and, under special circumstances, without guards in special protection mode. The machine control system complies with Performance Level C according to ENG16228 to ensure a high level of functional safety.

The powerful Volvo TAD 572VE diesel engine (160kW) in the KR 709-3G is certified to the EU's Tier 4 emission standards and, therefore, complies with current emissions regulations. The drilling rig is also extremely easy to service. For example, filters and components are ideally positioned for ease of access.
This type of rig is very popular in the United Kingdom and North America and has proved itself in many applications. The KR 709-3G from KLEMM Bohrtechnik will be showcased at Bauma 2019 in Munich, where a version with an extra-long drill mast for CFA piles (single pass) will be on display.
