The project is being delivered by Future Valleys Construction, on behalf of the Welsh government.
It is a multi-phased road network upgrade that will transform the existing highway from a single-lane to a dual-lane carriageway along an 11-mile (17.7km) stretch.
When completed the new dual carriageway will improve traffic flow and journey safety. It will also improve access to key services and employment while encouraging investment across the Heads of the Valleys. It will improve traffic flow and make it safer to overtake, especially around junctions and areas with poor visibility. It will also improve access to key services, jobs and markets - supporting inward investment to areas like the Ebbw Vale Enterprise Zone.
Bauer Technologies' scope of works is split over three phases, which commenced October 2021 and will end October 2024, and includes contiguous wall piles ranging from 880mm to 1,500mm, with additional bearing piles of a similar diameter. All piles will require an element of rock drilling within the Carboniferous Millstone series located beneath the site, adding complexity to the project.
Speaking about the project award, Michael Jones, managing director, Bauer Technologies, said: "Bauer Technologies is proud to be working on this prestigious project, which is both challenging and complex. However, our multi-disciplinary team is experienced in all the required specialisms and more than capable of completing this project on time and to budget."
