The Primary Supports Team of the Tunnel Hauptbahnhof joint venture has completed the installation of 2,500m of steel supports weighing 1,800t.

The particular challenges during this step were, on the one hand, the difficult logistical side conditions at the construction site, and on the other hand strict requirements for vertical positioning of the primary supports.

The necessary drilling works were carried out using slurry stabilised drilling, with the 42m long steel supports delivered to the site ‘just in time' in three segments. The support segments were assembled in the borehole together with the pile reinforcement and installed up to a depth of 70m.

Deutsche Bahn awarded the first two tenders for the main construction measures (VE 10 + VE 30) to the companies Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG, Max Bögl Stiftung & Co. KG, Ed. Züblin AG, and Bauer Spezialtiefbau GmbH. These works include the western above-ground section, from Laim to Donnersberger Brücke, and the Hauptbahnhof, including the tunnel section from Donnersberger Brücke to Marienhof.

The Munich S-Bahn transports up to 840,000 passengers per day and travels more than 20 million km per year. This makes it one of the largest city train systems in Germany. Construction of the 2nd core route, approximately 10km between the stations of Laim in the west and Leuchtenbergring in the east, will significantly increase the capacity of Munich's local transport system.
