The works are being carried out under the Highways England Road Investment Strategy Programme. The Programme is a five-year blueprint for government investment in the UK's strategic road network, with the national programme of works slated to run from the beginning of April 2020 through to the end of March 2025.

Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd initially worked on the A19 Road Improvement Scheme under a Professional Services Contract (PCS) to provide the delivery consortium with expert advice on all aspects of the design and installation of the required sheet pile package. Its in-depth technical analysis and hands-on know-how helped to ensure that a cost-effective solution was proposed to the group.

This early involvement in the project by the specialist sheet piling contractor helped to generate significant cost and programme savings, from the original sheet pile proposal for the scheme.

As part of the £63 million (US$79 million) contract, a 5km stretch of the A19 trunk road between Norton and Wynyard will be increased in capacity from two to three lanes. In total, approximately 2.5km of permanent steel sheet piles will be installed to widen both north and southbound earthworks, utilising a combination of Emirates Steel sheet piles and Arcelor Mittal steel sheet pile sections.

In order to mitigate the extensive enabling works which would otherwise be required, Sheet Piling (UK) is utilising its unique TM12/15 long reach telescopic leader rig, which also provided the main contractor with additional cost and programme savings.

The upgrade works to the A19 in Stockton-on-Tees commenced in spring 2020 and are scheduled for completion in spring 2022.
