GEL completes drilling at Cornish geothermal project

At the United Downs Deep Geothermal Power project in Cornwall, UK, Geothermal Engineering Limited (GEL) has completed the drilling of both wells.

UD-1 reached a depth of 5,275m in April and on Friday June 28 UD-2 reached a depth of 2,393m, having reached the Porthtowan Fault Zone.

UD-2 is the project's injection well and has been designed to intersect at the target geological structure some 2,000m above the production well, giving the project a large heat transfer area between the wells.

Some adjustments were made to the initial well design as a result of lessons learned on UD-1 and this speeded up the drilling process.

Demobilisation of the Innovarig will now commence. GEL is currently in the process of removing all the ancillary equipment before the removal of the main rig elements by the end of July.

Once the rig and ancillary equipment have all been removed from the site, preparation for the testing phase of the project will begin. This may include the need for a ‘workover' rig to carry out some activities.
