Geoquip Saentis sails for maiden job

Following a dry-dock overhaul to install a drill rig, Geoquip's Saentis has begun its maiden voyage

The Geoquip Saentis is a 2005 build, DP2 vessel, specially designed for offshore support and ROV services in harsh weather conditions. In early 2019, she went through a massive overhaul and has been commissioned to conduct offshore geotechnical operations.

The fully heave compensated GMR600 drilling rig has been installed over the 4 x 4m midship moon pool. With her 720m2 deck space, she provides a stable platform for offshore geotechnical operations.

Following the overhaul, Saentis is now capable of handling 600m of drill string and down to 1000m with aluminium pipe. The GMR600 rig has a 4m stroke passive heave compensation.

A comprehensive range of wireline downhole sampling tools are available onboard Saentis including piston sampling, push sampling, wireline core barrel and percussion (hammer) sampling. All downhole tools are fully compatible with the 5.5in API drill string. A range of drag and specialised coring bits are provided. Large diameter cores are possible thanks to the large diameter drill pipe.

Fitted with a wireline operated, 3m PCPT tool for cone penetration testing with pore water pressure measurement, and a wireline operated, 3m seismic PCPT tool for cone penetration testing with pore water pressure and seismic velocity measurements, the Saentis presently has 350m PCPT umbilical and winch capacity. A downhole PS wave logger is available as required.

In addition to the drill rig and ancillary equipment, the Geoquip Saentis is also fitted with an offshore soil laboratory, enabling Geoquip Marine's geotechnical engineers to immediately conduct soil classification and determine strength parameters for design, analysis and assessments in real-time while offshore. The data allows the engineers to do spudcan penetration and/or pile capacity/installation analysis onboard as the borehole progresses, allowing an optimisation of the actual borehole depth.

The laboratory is equipped with the necessary tools to conduct standard soil and rock tests. Routine sample handling, photography, classification and storage are part of the everyday work process in the laboratory. The testing regime on samples varies and can be tailored to each project.

Recovered samples are stored in a temperature-controlled environment prior to shipment to an onshore facility.
