CAN Geotechnical readies to stabilise residential development

Geotechnical engineering specialist, CAN Geotechnical Ltd, has been awarded a substantial slope stabilisation contract for the Parkside development, a large-scale residential project which forms part of the regeneration of the Heathside and Lethbridge housing estates in Lewisham, UK.

With works underway on Phase 5 and 6 of the development, there is a requirement to stabilise two soil embankments on the perimeter of the site, to create a suitable level formation for construction of the planned new homes.

The slope stabilisation programme, provided by CAN Geotechnical, forms part of the enabling works for phases 5 and 6 of the Parkside development, which when complete will comprise over 1,200 new homes. Specifically, it will see CAN Geotechnical install over 600 soil nails, up to 15m deep and 3000m2 of Tecco high tensile netting and erosion matting will cover the stabilised slopes.

In addition, a double depth gabion wall will be built along the toe of the lower slope and a smart ditch drainage system will be constructed to intercept and divert water from the slope.

The project, which commenced mid-February 2020, is not without its challenges, with CAN Geotechnical working with quite a complex programme.

As a result of the time constraints, CAN Geotechnical will deploy up to four drill teams working at once, using different types of on-slope drill rigs, while working concurrently with standard and long reach excavator mounted drill rigs.

The project is expected to take 12 weeks to complete.
